Shore Infotech is an Information technology organization that specializes in customer data management and provides key insights forecasting based on data analytics. The organization can help clients to leverage the data, structured or unstructured to achieve the required goals. Shore offers a vast range of business intelligence, proprietary datasets, and technologies that work to use the power of big data to solve challenges that require precision and expertise.

They leverage the latest technology and techniques in data harvesting, processing, machine learning, and Natural Language Processing to help actualize your unique path to success.

Challenge

Since the business model deals with the storage of large amounts of structured and unstructured data in the form of documents, images and videos for analytics purpose, reliability, availability, and durability along with cost becomes a major challenge. Another challenge was accidental deletion of data with less or no option for retrieval.

Shore Group also wished to overhaul their existing document repository and discovery product to meet the growing market expectations related to search and performance.

Solution

1. Set up file management and content processing engine based on the Serverless Application Modelling Architecture of AWS
2. AWS DynamoDB has been configured to manage the workflow entities
3. AWS SQS has been configured to ensure parallel processing of file movement from one bucket to another and to extract content from each file
4. AWS Elasticsearch has been configured to allow a full-text search of the document
5. We used the S3versioning to preserve, retrieve, and restore every version of every object stored.

-SAP Solutions Manager 7.2 is to be Installed at AWS.

Benefits

Shore has adapted AWS to resolve existing challenges, also achieving durability of 11 9’s and availability of 99.9% through it. S3 versioning was leveraged to ensure data was never lost even if it is accidentally deleted.

The need to have SAN, NAS infrastructure for redundant backup storage and infrastructure was no longer necessary as buckets could be replicated. EBS based solution with EC2 instance running watcher functions was not an ideal solution for shore group as it did not ensure security or reliability.

Nodes with watcher functions on EC2 instances to watch for files to be processed were replaced with SQS along with the logic of processing of the input jobs automatically using Lambda. This has enabled shore to go serverless reducing overheads of SLA and increasing performance.

Data breach threat was solved by using Server Side Encryption and Key Management Service – KMS-SSE combination to protect S3 buckets.

Fast-tracking Product Development at Knowledge Crystals

  1. Home
  2. >
  3. Case Study

  5. Page 3

Knowledge Crystals Private Limited is a start-up based out of Hyderabad, India. The company is part of the tech ecosystem connecting academic institutions with their large student and prospect communities across the country. It builds web and mobile applications using the technology stack of Java and Angular JS, and deploys them on AWS infrastructure for ease of scalability.

Challenge

Our client deals with all the typical start-up challenges of resources and bandwidth. Many of their software developers were occupied with manual administrative processes for their software development. These manual processes included code push, code merge, building & testing, as well as code deployment. Because these tasks were being done manually, build and compile errors were not being tracked, and there were several instances of uncontrolled commits and merges across different developer teams on different branches such as development, QA, UAT, and live branches. With wrong code being merged into code repositories, the day-to-day manual deployment issues caused major mess-ups, and in some cases wrong code deployments, requiring huge efforts and interventions to resolve. These challenges put a large strain on the software developers and they were unable to devote focused attention to their primary tasks of writing great code and developing great products. The in-house team was not aware of the DevOps competency nor familiar with the industry best practices. Hence, the company approached us to help them shorten their product development lifecycle, through the philosophy of continuous integration (CI) and continuous delivery (CD).

The Devops Solution Approach

Untangled code deployments

Under the new process the code repository is hosted on AWS CodeCommit which help with easy collaboration among developers. The Jenkins plugin for AWS Code-Commit automatically merges the code created by several developers across the company, and it can be triggered only by the development team leader. This process prevents unauthorized or multiple code merges. Code pulls and checkouts are also automated further preventing any errors. Moreover, all compilation errors are now automatically logged and notifications are mailed to the relevant developers and their team leaders in case of failures. The icing on the cake of the new process is that in case of a build failure, the new build can be easily rolled back, as all previously successful software builds are archived.

Easy infrastructure administration

On the infrastructure front, the developed code is deployed using AWS Beanstalk which automatically handles capacity provisioning, load balancing, and scaling requirements. Further, the CloudBees plugin for AWS Elastic Beanstalk prevents any code from being deployed onto wrong AWS environments. This has freed developers from their earlier manual, time-consuming, infrastructure administration tasks.

Automated frontend UI development

The web application front-end UI was designed on Angular 2 and built using Angular CLI using Jenkins. The post-build static html content is now hosted on a AWS S3 bucket that is enabled by static web site hosting. This takes care of the earlier headaches relating to durability and scalability, and has significantly reduced the costs as well. The Minfy designed CI / CD framework has completely automated the entire build, trigger, and deployment cycle for Knowledge Crystals' frontend UI.

Simplified database management

The user database is also hosted on the cloud and managed using AWS RDS which frees the team from repetitive tasks relating to data backup, replication, availability, and snapshots.

Robust security and monitoring

Lastly, Knowledge Crystals security and monitoring systems for their data and infrastructure are now far more robust. AWS Identity and Access Management (IAM) is used to manage developer access to cloud resources. Security audits are performed using AWS CloudTrail which enables easy logging of all activities across the AWS stack. Lastly, AWS Trusted Advisor provides real time scanning of all the cloud infrastructure for cost optimization, performance, security, tolerance, and service limits

Benefits

The DevOps methodology leveraging the AWS stack has freed developers of infrastructure administration and scaling tasks, while also freeing the development process from costly, time-consuming version control errors. Along with significant savings in time to build and deploy, the effort, cost, and time for infrastructure planning and maintenance has also reduced. The several trainings that we conducted in Knowledge Crystals on the new framework for build, deployments, and testing has significantly improved their resource efficiency. The new email approval plugin has enabled a streamlined release management process, and the implementation of code is now practically seamless. Also, the new build notifications have greatly contributed towards the overall stability of the build process.

Leading Global Audit Firm Leverages Minfy to develop a comprehensive GST compliance solution

  1. Home
  2. >
  3. Case Study
  4. >
  5. Page 3

Our client is a multinational professional services network headquartered in London, United Kingdom. It is one of the largest professional services firms in the world, one of the Big Four auditors, and has a network of firms across the world providing services to most of the Fortune 500 companies.

Challenge

With GST being an extremely complex ground-breaking initiative that completely did away with several legacy tax laws and regulations, the Indian industry struggled with teething problems. A growing number of businesses were expected to use the new platform to ensure their tax compliance, and our client needed to ensure scalability of the solution. Further, due to the complex, evolving nature of the new tax rules, the solution had to address several other challenges such as frequent configuration changes and updates, and enhanced security policies.

One of the main components of the GST compliance solution was a module to generate e-way bill (EWB) numbers for goods being transported across the country for further processing or sales. The EWB solution was a workflow and collaboration platform for stake-holders such as manufacturers, transporters, and recipients, that generated e-way bills electronically and included an audit trail that integrated with the overall GST Compliance Solution. To deal with these several ongoing challenges, our client engaged Minfy to host the module's application infrastructure on the cloud and also make it DevOps compliant.

The Devops Solution Approach

Continuous Integration and Delivery The DevOps methodology leveraging the AWS stack frees developers of infrastructure administration and scaling tasks through the philosophy of continuous integration and continuous delivery. It also frees the development process from costly, time-consuming version control errors. Along with significant savings in time to build and deploy software code, it also reduces the effort, cost, and time for infrastructure planning and maintenance.

Solution Overview

As the EWB solution, as part of the overall GST Compliance solution, deals with sensitive business critical data of our client’s customers, the architecture was built to have rock solid security features. A custom VPC was used, with deployment of an OpenVPN deployed in the public subnet. This helped with establishing a VPN connection between a customer's corporate network to the AWS network which could be used on demand. Due to the constantly changing regulatory landscape, new notifications on changes to the GST laws were being released by the Income Tax department almost every other day. AWS components such as Lambda, CodeBuild, CodeDeploy, CodePipeline, and Code-Commit which were used in the solution architecture relieved our client’s developers from operational and infrastructure administration tasks and also enabled easy collaboration. This helped them focus on keeping the solution up to date. Also, AWS CodePipeline helped them with the continuous and constant release of updates and patches. As the GST roll-out gathered momentum, and over two hundred and fifty companies got onto the solution platform, actionable insights and alerts from AWS CloudWatch helped our client respond to system-wide performance changes, optimize resources.

Benefits

Better Tax Compliance and Supply Chain Efficiencies

With the DevOps framework, AWS-enabled E-way bill solution, our client was able to offer its customers across the country a speedy, scalable, cost-efficient and highly secure means to remain tax compliant amidst changing regulatory requirements. The electronically generated e-way bills have helped with reducing police harassment and corruption issues for transporters and minimized the complexities associated with remaining tax-compliant. At Minfy, the team that helped build the solution view their efforts as a contribution towards building supply chain efficiencies for the nation.
